Bird watching haven in Kenya

Owing to the discovery of the latest bird migratory corridor in Kenya, the country will be hosting an annual birds’ watching festival towards the end of the year.

Bird-watchers can now turn their eyes towards Tugumoi at the Great Rift Valley corridor, an area which sits at the border of Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. The two County Governments are liaising to mobilize the locals to turn up in large numbers and transform the phenomenon into a seasonal event which has been compared to the annual wildebeest migration at the Mara.

“We are certain this migratory will place not only the two counties on the global map, but Kenya as a birding destination,” says William Kimosop, Baringo county Chief Warden.

During the launch of bird watching awareness campaigns last week, the authorities hosted a team from Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and Nature Kenya ahead of the inaugural annual bird-watching season set to begin towards the end of this year.

Conservationists reckon that the migratory birds could be escaping the winter weather currently experienced in Europe to find a safe haven in the tropical regions. The event, which will also feature drama songs and dances, birding presentations, and bird facts and quizzes among other interactive activities, is expected to bring together both local and international birdwatchers at this observatory site.
