Editors' Upcoming Travel Picks

If you’re wondering where to travel in the coming months, then we have a bonanza of deals for you; trips that perhaps you haven’t thought about before or you just pushed them aside.

As you are aware, various airlines around East Africa have recently added many international and local routes to give travelers more options for flying and getting to places faster than before.  One example is Kenya Airways flying directly to Victoria Falls beginning this month.

So for those of you undecided travelers, please allow us to offer you some suggestions, beginning with AFRICA first of course:

  1. Annual Migration: With the approaching peak safari season in the months ahead in East Africa where tourists come to see the annual migration of the wildebeest, the month of May offers some reprieve from the weather with milder temperatures, minimal humidity, low rainfall and, of course, less crowds. Around June and July the migration should be in western Serengeti and then onward north in August September in northern Serengeti and into Kenya’s Masai Mara. Once in your life, the migration is a must see spectacle.

  2. South Africa this time of the year offers great weather and “shoulder season” rates.  Cape Town has many festivals happening in May, e.g., the Riebeek Valley Olive Festival, the Franschhoek Literary Festival, the Nuy Valley Harvest Festival to name a few. Do day trips around Cape Town or extended the trip to include a tour of the Garden Route with a national park visit.

  3. Mauritius – this small island has the best beach weather most of the year, and the month of May is warm with less humidity and more comfortable.  It too has great deals this time of the year.

  4. Malawi, Namibia and Botswana are also great destinations this time of the year as they are generally warm and dry.

  5. Victoria Falls is another destination as the rainy season is coming to an end allowing for great viewing of the falls in all its natural glory.  Now it’s even easier to fly there without having to go via in Johannesburg if you‘re flying from Nairobi.  Victoria Falls now also has a new international airport ready to welcome you.

From East Africa, these countries and just a short flight or two away. Treat yourself to what some of the very unique cultural and natural beauty of your neighboring countries in Africa.
