Rickshaw Travels' African Adventure Bucket List for 2016

Are you one of those travelers that loves to indulge in an adventure while on holiday? If swimming with sharks or sailing solo around the world is not your cup of tea, then perhaps one of these adventure activities will give you the adrenalin rush you need.  Below are Rickshaw’s top adventure experiences (there are many more) when travelling to Africa.  They range from a 216 metre bungee jump off a bridge to a 330 ft abseiling drop down the side of a waterfall. How about an hour with a gorilla family or a climb up the highest mountain in Africa?  It’s all here, in Africa, waiting for you to experience.

1.      Bungee Jumping in South Africa – One, Two, Jump!

The thought of jumping from a bridge at 216 meters is certainly going to give some people the weak knee but for others it’s an experience of a lifetime. Bungee jumping in South Africa has earned a global reputation for its claim to having the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. It attracts adventure seekers from all over the globe. Positioned along the gorgeous Garden Route, the Bloukrans Bungee Jump will send you plummeting 216m, headfirst, towards the bottom. Because of the extreme height of this bungee jump, a full body harness is used, instead of the traditional ankle harness. The harness, combined with a technique called 'pendulum bungee technology', makes for a very comfortable jump - considering the fact that you're jumping off a 216m high bridge. The Bloukrans Bungee jump is located in one of the scenic areas of South Africa giving you a breathtaking view. Are you gutsy enough to try this?

2.      Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda – Up, Close and Personal

If this is not on your bucket list then add it now! It’s an experience unmatched to many others; the Mountain Gorillas can only be seen in Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. In Volcanoes National Park, the Rwandan part of the Virungas, ten gorilla groups are now habituated for gorilla safaris, more than anywhere else in the world. Be prepared for a hike that may take up to 4 hours until you get to see the Gorillas. You will always have a guide with you making the trek easier by briefing you at all times. The best time to go gorilla trekking is between December and February and from June to mid September. A Gorilla permit costs US $750 per person (for non nationals). Gorilla trekking safaris offer a magical encounter that transcends any other 'wildlife' experience.

3.      Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro – Literally feel like ‘On Top of the World’

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free standing mountain in the world. Crowned with an everlasting snow-cap, this majestic mountain can be found inside the Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania. To accomplish this climb is more of an achievement than an adventure. It takes months of intense training, both mental and physical to successfully complete the climb. A proud story that will be told over the years and one that should certainly feature on your list of accomplishments. We can make it happen for you.

4.      Abseiling at Sipi Falls in Uganda – Explore the falls differently

When visiting Uganda, make sure to plan a trip to the Sipi Falls. A few hours from Kampala, the majestic falls at Sipi makes it a perfect destination for a weeklong getaway. The best adventure to experience at Sipi Falls is abseiling down the face of the largest waterfall. Strap on a harness and step backward off a cliff into the rainbow mists of the 330-foot waterfall for an incredible experience.

5.      Sky Diving in Diani, Kenya – You can fly too

Diani is one of Africa’s most beautiful beach destinations but besides the white sand beaches, it has other adventure to offer as well. Sky diving tops the list giving you the thrill and a lifetime experience of a tandem jump from 10,000 ft. You don’t require any training; only a short briefing is needed for a tandem jump as Sky Dive Diani has certified divers who will accompany you on your leap of faith.
