Vacations Animal Lovers will LOVE

Vacation memories are made extra special when they include seeing wildlife in their natural habitats and homelands. They are unique when experienced in their natural surrounds, and many countries now encourage conscious expeditions for visitors to see interesting animals in their natural habitats. If you’re an animal-lover, one of these vacations may be right up your alley

1. Sloths in Costa Rica

Though calling someone a “sloth” usually implies that they’re lazy, the word actually comes from the animal’s slow movements and tired eyes. These animals are good at staying hidden in the rainforest canopy, keeping them away from predators like eagles and jaguars. Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica is 40.5 square miles of protected forest where you can see sloths in their natural element. The best time to visit is dry season – January to April.

2. Mountain Gorillas in Uganda

400 mountain gorillas live in the perse rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and are protected by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority. These mountain gorillas make up nearly half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas, and guests can visit the gorilla colonies with a ranger while taking in views of the beautiful jungle around them. Rangers check in on the animals daily, keeping them safe from poachers, or from fires on neighbouring farms. Dry seasons are May to September and December and February. But remember, it is the rain forest. Always be prepared to get wet.

3. Pygmy Marmoset in Peru

One of the world’s smallest primates, the pygmy marmoset lives in the perse landscape of Manu National Park in Peru. The tiny pygmy hides from predators in the canopy and branches of the quassia trees, but trained guides will help you spot the marmosets by drawing them out from their hiding places. Best viewing times are during dry season from May to August.

4. Elephants in Botswana

Elephants are gentle, family-oriented, intelligent creatures that are natural to habitats around Asia and Africa. But the highest concentration of elephants – around 120,000! – is found at Chobe National Park in Botswana. Elephants are protected by the government, and this protection has brought first-rate safaris to the area. If it’s the baby elephants you want to see, time your visit during wet season – November to March.

5. Emperor Penguins in Antarctica

Human activity has caused rapid changes in the natural habitat of emperor penguins – the only animals that live on the frozen ice of Antarctica. Temperatures in the winter drop to -76 degrees Fahrenheit and blizzard winds get up to nearly 125 mph. The little ones huddle together for warmth while their parents search for food, making it one of the coldest – but cutest – sights you’ve ever seen.
