The Hari Parbat Fort in Kashmir has opened to the public for the first time. The ancient fort’s origins date back as far as 1590, when the Mughal emperor Akbar had the outer wall built as the first stage of a project to create a new capital called Nager Nagor within the walls.
That project was never completed, but construction continued in 1808 when the present fort was built under the reign of Shuja Shan Durrani.
Nowadays it sits above the city of Srinagar. More recently the fort was used as a base by the Indian Army, but it has now opened for the first time to the public.
Visits to the fort can now be included during a tour of the Old City, and can also be visited as part of any of Wild Frontiers’ tours of Kashmir.
