The World Tours and Tourism Council has awarded Rwanda the Global Tourism Leadership Award for its continued efforts to promote and protect the natural resources of the country. Almost 25 years since a violent genocide in the country, Rwanda has now been considered one of the safest countries to visit in East Africa for almost 15 years. 

The government has worked closely with conservation authorities to reintroduce lions and rhinos to Akagera park, and gorilla trekking continues to be one of the most popular tourist activities in East Africa.
