Emirates will be introducing a seat selection ancillary fee, effective from October 3, 2016. The Dubai-based carrier has confirmed a ‘minimal charge’ will be applicable to those passengers who will book a certain category of seats in the Economy Class. The charge is only applicable on Special and Saver fares in Economy Class and will vary depending on the duration of the flight.

The seat selection charge, which start at Dh50 (USD 14 approx.) for short-haul flights, will see children below a certain age exempt from the fee structure, while older ones will be eligible to a 50 per cent discount on the additional fee.

An Emirates’ spokesperson stated: “Children below the age of two and accompanying passengers on the same booking will be exempted from the fee.’’ This charge is also not applicable once online check-in opens, which is 48 hours before flight departure. At this stage, seat selection is free.
