Tanzanias First Tourist Police Station Opens In Arusha

This past spring, Arusha took a huge step forward in ensure that the area remains a safe haven for foreign tourists and diplomats.

On Saturday, April 7, Tanzanian President Dr. John Magufuli inaugurated the Tourism and Diplomatic Station in Arusha. This brand new facility will handle all legal issues that affect both domestic and international tourists in the very popular safari-centered area.

The private and public partnership that built the station was hailed as a win by Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro, who said “Construction of the centre is a result of good cooperation between police and stakeholders, this is really encouraging.”

At the inauguration ceremony, President Magufuli remarked, “I would like to see other regional authorities to emulate the Arusha spirit where public and private sectors come together, chart out and implement their development projects.”

The impetus behind the operation was the Tanzanian Association of Tour Operators (TATO), whose mission is to make sure that Tanzania’s northern tourist hub remains safe for all visitors to the region, and ensuring that tourists do not fall victim to deceitful tour operators who try to lure visitors with false advertising.

The Tourism and Diplomatic Station is the first tourist police station of its kind in the country, and is suited to serve the needs of tourists who have been victimized by shady operators and unfulfilled promises.
