Uganda aims to increase its share of the North American tourism market by becoming a member of the National Tour Association (NTA). During the past few years, Uganda has seen increased investment in tourism infrastructure, such as city hotels, game parks and access roads. However, Oliver Wonekha, Uganda’s ambassador to the U.S., explained that even though Uganda has some of Africa’s best tourist attractions, the number of tourists from North America visiting the country hasn’t really increased. She said the embassy is working together with the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities; Uganda Tourism Board; Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Association of Uganda Tour Operators to increase the country’s visibility as a unique tourist destination.
Steve Richer, the public affairs advocate for the NTA, said the membership would enable North American tour operators, airlines and other players in the travel industry to work closely with their Ugandan counterparts to market Uganda as a favorable destination for North Americans. Uganda is scheduled to host the 39th Annual Congress of the Africa Travel Association in Kampala in November, an opportunity for Uganda to showcase its tourism potential and for local tour operators to develop partnerships with their counterparts in North America.
