Worlds First Underground Hotel in Shanghai

In the Sheshan Mountain Range just outside of Shanghai, you can now find the world’s first quarry hotel. After 10 years of construction, the hotel – with two floors above ground, and sixteen floors below ground (including two under water) – is being called the first “earthscraper”, because it is built vertically along the precipice of an underground, water-filled quarry. The Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland (also known as Shimao Quarry Hotel) has cliff-view rooms that give guests abyss-like views, not found in any other hotel in the world. British architect Martin Joshman designed the hotel, and said about it: “It’s the first time to turn an abandoned quarry into a wonderful hotel beneath the ground. This is such a unique opportunity that gives me some really interesting ideas of reshaping the relationship between city and nature.” The hotel hosts 336 rooms as well as a restaurant, sports and recreation facilities including rock climbing and bungee jumping, an amusement park, water sports and plans for a shopping centre next year.
