Ramadan marks the beginning of the Islamic holy month of fasting, reflection, and observation for Muslims worldwide. Based on the moon citing, this year's holy month will begin on 1st April.
Are you travelling to countries that observe Ramadan? Here are three tips on how to get into the Ramadan spirit when you get there.
Eating Out
Muslims fast every day from dawn until sunset during Ramadan. Because of this, some countries prohibit eating and drinking in public during this month, restaurants are closed all day and only open during Iftar (the meal eaten after sunset when breaking the fast), and restaurants may require reservations or restrict hours of operation.
Research and find out about hotels that can accommodate non-fasting guests before visiting. Also, learn about Iftar timings to enjoy the fast-breaking festivities each evening with the Muslim community.
Customs and Rituals
During the holy month, you will meet people who are celebrating, fasting and doing all sorts of other things specific to this month. Be aware of Ramadan customs such as what to wear or how to behave and other rituals so you don't get caught off guard.
Check with your host or search the Internet for more information if you are in doubt.
Celebrating Eid al-Fitr
The last day of Ramadan is Eid al-Fitr (Eid). Eid is like Christmas for Muslims in that everyone comes together for big meals with family and friends, exchange presents, and generally spend time together. Most people celebrate Eid at home with their families and friends, but some make the most of the opportunity by travelling to different places. Plan to celebrate Eid al Fitr to a different destination and invite your loved ones for a memorable experience.
