INDIA HAS MORE THAN THE TAJ MAHAL

We’ve all heard the saying “Incredible India” and we all know India is famous for the Taj Mahal, which monument brings in millions of visitors, more local than overseas, but it does attract a fair amount of overseas tourists, around 200,000 a year according to the official website of the Taj Mahal.

So if you’ve already done the Taj visit, what else can India offer a traveler who wants to sidestep a visit to Agra. For starters, there are the Himalayas which for any trekker is the ultimate draw.  The most popular activity for trekkers is the four to six hour treks between villages.

If you’re a movie buff, you might want to try the Bollywood Tour. These tours will take you where the shooting is taking place – dancing and action scenes being the more popular ones.  Okays so you’re not the Bollywood type, but a food lover. For you there are the cooking holidays. Yes cooking holidays, where you can learn Indian kitchen skills, e.g. vegetarian cooking. For the tea lover, there is Darjeeling, the scenic hill station near the Indian-Nepal border and the base for all early Himalayan expeditions.

The Golden Temple in Amritsar attracts both believers and nonbelievers, especially during Diwali and Sikh holy days when the temple lit by oil lamps makes for a glittering spectacle. No one at this temple will approach you for money, which makes it stand out from others.

The Western Ghats were awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO.  The climate is cool and there are several hill stations along the range here. For the not so faint hearted, paragliding is quite famous here.

Other off the beaten path activities could be volunteering, yoga retreats, doing a motor cycle tour, or just sight seeing major cities, enjoying their food, peoples and culture.
