SPOTLIGHT ON UGANDA

Uganda, a small landlocked country is often dismissed when travellers are looking for a trip to East Africa, with most travellers wanting to go to Kenya, Tanzania or even South Africa, thus leaving Uganda untouched by mass tourism.

Ernest Hemingway named Uganda “The Pearl of Africa” – and indeed the country has so much to offer. There are the famous mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Chimpanzees in Kibale Rainforest, the beautiful Rwenzori Mountain range. Find tree climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park together with elephants, leopards, cape buffaloes, Uganda kobs, waterbuck and many more. Or you could visit Kidepo Valley National Park, a rugged savannah where wildlife and nature are still untouched.

Take a trip to the Murchison Falls where the Victoria Nile surges through a narrow gap 45m down into the Rift Valley or go to the source of the River Nile in Jinja. On the way to these falls you can make a stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Lake Victoria, Africa’s biggest lake is one of the many lakes in the crater area, another being Lake Bunyonyi, which offer great places to relax after a long and tiring safari.

For adventurous travellers, Uganda has gorilla and primate treks, white water rafting on the historic River Nile, bungee jumping, hiking the Rwenzori Mountains (altitude 5.110m) or Mount Elgon in the eastern part of the country.

More relaxed trips could be a walking safari for bird lovers. Uganda hosts nearly 1100 species of birds including the rare Shoebill or the Blue Breasted Kingfisher.

The permit fee for spending time with the mountain gorillas has remain unchanged in Uganda and when compared to Rwanda is a bargain after Rwanda increased their permit fee to US $1,500 per person.
