Plastic Bags Banned in Tanzania as of June 1

27th May, 2019 12:20:23

Tanzania has imposed a ban on the import, export, manufacture, sale, supply, storage and use of plastic carrier bags as of June 1, 2019. Use of plastic bags can result in a monetary fine, imprisonment or both. There are some exceptions for plastics used in medical services, food processing, sanitary and waste management and more. But those travelling to Tanzania should note that bringing in regular plastic carrier bags is no longer permitted in Tanzania. ‘Ziplock bags’ will be permitted – they are often used to carry toiletries and are not expected to be disposed of within the country.
