JUNE 2012

The endless plains of East Africa are the setting for the world’s greatest wildlife spectacle. The annual wildebeest migration, largely driven by the rains, has the 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and gazelle on the move. Because there is no set schedule nor is there a set route they will follow, these animals will follow different routes, all trying to get to the same destination. While on safari, you will witness thousands of them spread across the vast plains of Serengeti in Tanzania and Maasai Mara in Kenya.

For those of you reading this article in the beginning of June, we can tell you that the massive migratory herds are slowly heading northwest. The first large herds of zebra, which normally precede the wildebeest, have been spotted on the Musabi plains. This is a sign that the herds are moving towards the Western Corridor. Because the Seronera region is still lush and green, the herds don’t seem to be in any hurry to leave. It is anticipated that they will be in central Serengeti in the next couple of weeks.

The migration is a sight to behold and is something every traveler to East Africa must include in their itinerary.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Recently, our office in Kigali, Rwanda was recommended to Emily, by one of our dearest client, Patrick. Emily is a member of a group on Yahoo called Kigali Life and she was asking her Kigali Lifers if any one of them could recommend a travel agent. Patrick just jumped in and here is an excerpt on what he told her :-

"Hello Emily, I strongly recommend Rickshaw Travels. They are the best professional and most reliable people you can find in Africa. They are flexible and what I love the most about them is their listening to the customer's need and their availability, no matter what, to their customers. I guarantee that if you deal with them you won't regret it. Enjoy your holiday".

Thank you Patrick for those kind words and introducing us to Kigali Lifers.

Travel News Bits

It seems that Travel Agents have been news fodder in the United States. An article in the New York Times has started a debate about this topic "Are Travel Agents Back?" "They never left!" one responded. There is a link to this article if you'd like to join the discussion. Today's consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information online and are returning to the traditional travel agents to help them organize their travel. Travel agents can offer personal service together with the knowledge of the destinations they are selling. A unique experience that an online guide cannot provide.

Travel Agents today offer speedy service, personal attention and custom-tailored itineraries. They are constantly connected with their clients through e-mail, text messaging, blogs and on-line photos, to name a few. Today's travellers are tech- savvy and realize that a travel consultant is another research tool, only human and focused on their needs.

SPOTLIGHT ON KENYA TUSHIKAMANE PAMOJA FOUNDATION

Kenya today is world renowned for its safari destinations like Maasai Mara and the Amboseli National Park to name a couple. But don’t be fooled, because Kenya has a lot more than safaris to offer its tourist.

Another reason to visit Kenya is its natural beauty, which can be seen in the snow-capped Mount Kenya, the Rift Valley, themagnificent sandy beaches or the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Kenya is also becoming a golf holiday destination, with an abundance of beautiful courses around the major urban areas. Other activities to be enjoyed are snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, mountain biking, bird watching, hiking, river rafting – the list is endless.

Rickshaw is honored to support the Tushikamane Pamoja Foundation, a registered non-profit, non-government organization in Tanzania Mainland.  Its main objective is to help our vulnerable senior citizens by providing them food and clothing. On May 20, 2012, the foundation organized a fundraising event at Diamond Jubilee Hall to celebrate their 2nd anniversary.  This event helped create greater awareness of the Foundation’s current and future projects.  One such future project is the construction of a home for the elderly to allow them to live the rest of their lives in  dignity.  A noble cause indeed.

PREPARED FOR THE OLYMPICS? AIR TRAVEL GETTING EASIER

With the busy travel season upon us, the Olympic Games next month in London, England, and people generally ready to enjoy the summer holidays, most experts believe preparation is the key to avoid stress associated with travel.

For the busy business person, minimize business travel disruptions during the Olympics by reviewing your travel needs during that period. Here are some tips to avoid these during that period:

It seems that airports all over the world are trying to make travel a little easier on their customers, especially those travelers who have to spend time at airports during layovers.

These layovers can be anywhere from an hour to more than 6 hours depending on the connection, delays, which can also occur during bad weather and untimely cancellations. A growing number of new businesses are opening up a various airports to make air travel less stressful.
