The Olympic buzz is on.

Our East African Community is well represented in this year’s Olympics. This year Kenya is sending 13 athletes, Tanzania 6, Uganda 16, Rwanda 6 and Burundi 5. Most of our athletes are runners, but we have a mix of a few swimmers, we have a male and a female competing in Judo, a couple of boxers and even badminton.

Kenya has produced some of the best long distance runners in the world, both male and female. Kenya brought home 14 medals the last Olympics, all in middle and long-distance running events. Let us all cheer on our countries’ best athletes and whether they win or lose, we should all be very proud of them and their achievements.

Guess Where is this?

A big thank you to Naz and Rickshaw Travels for the excellent arrangements made for our 15 day holiday in East Africa. While on safari in Kenya (3 days) and Tanzania (5 days), we saw a large variety of animals and birds including the big 5. All of the hotels/lodges selected on the safari route were very good and in Masai Mara the Mara Ngenche Camp experience was particularly outstanding. Both the driver-guides in Kenya and Tanzania were extremely knowledgeable and we came away with interesting insights into the world of animals in their natural habitat.

After the safari we spent two days in Stonetown and four days at the Blue Bay resort on the beach in Zanzibar. Thanks to its excellent location, facilities and cuisine we enjoyed a very restful and relaxed holiday at the Blue Bay resort.

Once again we thank Naz and Rickshaw Travels for making this trip of a lifetime such a memorable vacation.

PENGUINS COME TO THE DUBAI DESERT GORILLAS DESTROY POACHERS' SNARES

Article by By Georgina Wilson-Powell

The desert is not a place you would expect to find snow, let alone penguins you can hug and play with. But Dubai has never adhered to convention (or common sense, some would argue). Ski Dubai, a snow park and ski complex in the Mall of the Emirates, recently became home to 20 flip-flopping penguins who emigrated from Sea World in Texas.

Poachers’ snares pose one of the biggest threats to mountain gorilla populations according to campaigners - and it seems that the gorillas themselves have worked this out, because they’ve been observed dismantling traps.

Field staff of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda report that on Monday they saw several young gorillas destroying snares - which maim and often kill gorillas - with their bare hands.
