What's up this August in Africa?

This month, we are looking back with Timlich Ohinga and looking forward with Kwita Izina. Thimlich Ohinga in Kenya has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. And the Kwita Izina Festival in Rwanda that will see the naming of 23 new baby gorillas at its culmination in September. Thimlich Ohinga is about history – where Kenya came from, and how it became as it is today. Thimlich Ohinga is about learning from the past. Kwita Izina is based on an ancient festival in Rwanda, but it is also about looking towards the future. The future of conservation. New World Heritage Site in Kenya

UNESCO (the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has granted Kenya its seventh World Heritage Site. On June 29th, Thimlich Ohinga, an ancient fortress in Kenya’s western Migori region was inscribed on the World Heritage List at the World Heritage Centre’s annual meeting in Bahrain.

Rwandan Festival Celebrates Gorillas

The 14th annual Kwita Izina Festival is underway in Rwanda, and will conclude in September with the naming of 23 gorillas born over the last year under the watchful eye of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).The naming of the gorillas at the end of the festival is especially poignant this year, given that the theme of these year’s festival is “Conservation of Life”, particularly the conservation of the endangered Mountain Gorilla.
